Yvonne’s Granddad used to work as a fisherman at sea and she talks fondly of his incredibly weathered face and all the different knots and knot making skills that were necessary to his trade. She has always been interested in the various craft based textiles such as knitting, crochet, weaving and embroidery using more traditional materials like wool and threads. We were discussing the skills involved in macramé using rope and various other textiles materials. Alongside Yvonne, Megan, Vic, Adele, Richard, Maggie, Alex, Franco, Anna and Dorothy were all keen to learn more and try out this skill.
We invited artist Lucy Wayman to come chat to us about her own arts practice which uses macramé processes and skills. She talked about her inspiration, different everyday materials she uses, such as rope, tights, fishing ropes and mop heads! She walked us thought some basic techniques and introduced us to the skills involved in Macramé.
Macramé is a form of textile produced using knotting (rather than weaving or knitting) techniques. The primary knots of macramé are the square or reef knot and forms of “hitching” and various combinations of half hitches.
We were also looking at the incredible sculptural forms of artist Ernesto Neto’s artwork.
